CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Drew Rasmussen hurled just the fourth perfect game in Pac-12 Conference history in leading No. 25 Oregon State to a 3-0 victory over Washington State in Pac-12 action Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
According to the Pac-12 media guide, Rasmussen became the first conference player to throw a perfect game since Washington State's Joe McIntosh did the same in an 8-0 victory against Whitworth, March 10, 1973. The Beaver starter did not allow a ball out of the infield until Jack Strunc flied out to left to end the sixth. For the afternoon he only allowed only three balls to the outfield while striking out 10.
Oregon State provided Rasmussen with all the offense he needed by manufacturing a run in the first as a leadoff walk to Jeff Hendrix, passed ball and sacrifice put Hendrix on third with one out. KJ Harrison's singled to right for the 1-0 lead. The Beavers added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two singles and a throwing error by Cougar pitcher Joe Pistorese which led to both runs being unearned.
Pistorese was solid throughout as he also went the distance, allowing three runs, one earned, scattering five hits while striking out six. It was Pistorese's second-straight complete game as he fell to 3-2 on the season.
These same two teams conclude the series Sunday in a game televised by the Pac-12 Networks. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
