TUCSON, Ariz. – The Washington State University women's golf team concluded play at the Wildcat Invitational, Tuesday, notching a 12th-place finish in a field that boasted eight nationally-ranked opponents. The Cougars shot a third-round 305 (+17) and finished the tournament 47-over par (911). WSU finished two strokes ahead of No. 46 Kansas (+49, 913) and one stroke back from Wisconsin (+46, 910) in 11th place.
WSU's underclassmen led the way at the Sewailo Golf Club, as sophomore Cherokee Kim and freshman Alivia Brown carded scores of 224 (+8) and 225 (+9), respectively. Kim fired a third-round 76 (+4), finishing even with par on the front nine, and finished the tournament tied for 30th. Brown's final round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 475-yard No. 5 hole. The freshman carded the lowest score of the day for the Cougars, as she finished 3-over (75) and tied for 38th place.
Senior Kristen Rue and junior Rachel Lewis turned in matching scorecards in the third round, shooting 5-over (77). Rue carded a 232 (+16) in the tournament and finished tied for 63rd. Lewis finished one stroke back from the senior with a three-round 233 (+17). Lewis notched 12 birdies over 54 holes and finished tied for 66th. Junior Nani Yanagi (+20, 236) finished tied for 71st.
In individual play, junior Monica Huang (+18, 234) finished tied for 69th, freshman Bree Wanderscheid (+24, 240) finished tied for 79th, and freshman Jamie Midkiff (+40, 256) finished 80th.
The Wildcat Invitational was delayed Monday night after darkness fell in Tucson, Ariz., with teams on the course completing the second round. The golfers returned to the course Tuesday morning to complete the second round before beginning final-round action.
The Cougars compete in their next tournament, April 6-7, at the Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Ariz.
