Cougars Finish Fourth at Bandon Dunes

BANDON, Ore. – Rain and wind washed out the third and final day at the Bandon Dunes Championships Sunday, shortening the event to two rounds as Washington State finished tournament in a tie for fourth place.

WSU notched its fifth Top-5 finish of the season after completing the two rounds at 3-over 579, tied with No. 36 Colorado. Both Pac-12 Conference schools finished behind St. Mary's (577) by two strokes and co-winners Duke (575) and Missouri (575) by four.

“The weather was terrible and unfortunately the final round was cancelled,” said WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg. “Our team played very good golf this week and we were right there heading into the final round. We would have liked to play today and see what we could do but overall a very good week for our team and I'm excited for our next event at Stanford.”

Senior Michael Anderson finished the tournament at 5-under 139 in second place, one shot off tournament medalist Cody Blick of San Jose State.  It marked Anderson's first top-five finish of the season.

Freshman Derek Bayley was even-par after opening rounds of 1-under and 1-over, finishing at 144 and tied for 13th overall.

“It was a great tournament for Michael Anderson,” said Clegg. “His senior year hasn't started the way he would have liked so hopefully this tournament will get his year going, He's a great player and it is good to see his confidence building.

“It was also another very solid tournament for Derek Bayley,” Clegg continued. ” He is quietly turning into a leader on this team.”

Junior Bhurinat Songpaiboon, who made a move up the leaderboard after the second round, finished at 2-over 146, tied for 23rd. Redshirt-senior Sang Lee entered Sunday at 6-over 150, tied for 50th.

Senior Charlie Mroz who moved up 13 spots between Friday and Saturday, ended his two rounds at 154 (+10), tied for 68th. Redshirt-senior Alex Wagner, competing as an individual, ended his tournament with a two-round total of 151, tied for 54th.

The Cougars are next in action Mar. 27-29 at The Goodwin in Stanford, Calif.
