Cougars Struggle Against No. 9 Cowboys

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Jon Perrin threw six-hitless innings as No. 9 Oklahoma State posted an 11-1 victory over Washington State Friday on day two of the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge in Surprise, Ariz.

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Cowboys improve to 2-3.

Oklahoma State jumped ahead early and never looked back after posting three runs in the bottom of the first off WSU starter Tyler McDowell (1-1), who only lasted 2/3 of an inning. He was one of five Cougar pitchers on the night that allowed OSU 11 runs on 14 hits.

The early lead was all OSU starter Perrin (1-1) needed in his gem, as he allowed only three baserunners and struck out six.

WSU found the board and its only two hits, both singles, in the eighth as Haakon Lande plated leadoff man Patrick McGrath. Reliever Conor Costello recorded the last nine-outs, allowing both Cougar hits while striking out four.

The Cowboys put the game away in the bottom half of the eighth as they added five more runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by Bryan Case off of Drew Lunde.

"We were just too passive today," said WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut. "It's unfortunate but this team will bounce back and be ready to play tomorrow."

The Cougars continue play at the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge squaring off against Kansas Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 PT.
