LIHUE, Hawaii – The Washington State University men's golf team moved up two spots in the final round of play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Friday, to finish in 10th place in a 17-team field at the Wailua Golf Course. The Cougars carded their lowest single-round score of the tournament, shooting even with par in the final round (288), to bring their three-round total to 891 (+27). WSU finished two strokes back from host-school Hawaii (+25, 889) and seven strokes behind Pac-12 foe Arizona (+20, 884) in seventh.
Freshman Derek Bayley led the Cougars in the third round, shooting 3-under par (69). Bayley's performance tied for the sixth-lowest score of the day. The Rathdrum, Idaho native carded three birdies on the back nine and finished the tournament tied for 27th (+6, 222). Redshirt-senior Sang Lee matched Bayley's three-round total, shooting 6-over (222) on the par-72 course. Lee shot 1-under on the front nine and carded a 73 (+1) in the final round.
“We played a lot better today,” WSU coach Garrett Clegg said. “We didn't give away as many strokes. We just needed a few more putts to drop. The second round hurt us, but we played well to finish the tournament. Derek did a great job today and Sang had a solid tournament as well.”
Senior Michael Anderson carded the second-best score of the day for the Cougars, shooting even with par (72). Anderson provided consistent play for WSU, carding par on 16 holes. Anderson finished the tournament tied for 43rd with a three-round 225 (+9).
Redshirt-senior Alex Wagner finished one stroke back from Anderson, carding a 226 (+10). Wagner shot 3-over (75) in the final round and finished tied for 49th. Senior Charlie Mroz provided the Cougars' final counting score of the day. Mroz carded his lowest score of the tournament, shooting 2-over (74) to finish tied for 62nd (+14, 230).
The Cougars have nearly a month-long break before they return to action. WSU will travel to Bandon, Ore., to compete in the Bandon Dunes Championship, March 13-15.
