MAUI, Hawaii – Derek Bayley moved 22 spots up the leaderboard to finish tied for 21st as the Washington State men's golf team finished 15th at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, Sunday, at the Royal Ka'anapali Course.
“This fall has hopefully shown our players that we have a lot to learn, but also that we are ready for the challenge,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said.
WSU shot 7-over par in the third round to bring its total score to 892 (+40). No. 13 Oklahoma (-15, 837) maintained its lead and won the tournament, as No. 12 Georgia (-3, 849) came in second and No. 35 NC State (+10, 862) came in third.
Highlighted by an eagle on the 14th hole, Bayley shot 4-under par (67) to bring his three-round total to 215 (+2). The sophomore finished 10 strokes back of tournament-champion Zach Healy of Georgia (-8, 205).
“I'm proud of all that Derek is doing for our program,” Clegg said. “He is really the leader of this team.”
Fellow sophomore Zach Anderson shot a third-round 75 (+4) to tie for 49th at 222 (+9). Senior Evan Omelia had his best round of the tournament as he shot a third-round 74 (+3) which included an eagle on the sixth hole. Omelia tied for 63rd (+13, 226).
Freshmen Aaron Whalen and Grant Cole tied for 86th (+21, 234) and 100th (+30, 243), respectively.
The Cougars will enter their spring season Jan. 29-30 at Tucson, Ariz., at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
