Volleyball Falls in Three at No. 11 UCLA
October 04, 2015 | Volleyball
LOS ANGELES -- Washington State Head Coach Jen Greeny said, “crucial errors at crucial times” plagued the Cougars volleyball team (12-4 overall, 1-3 Pac-12), as it fell 25-20, 25-18, and 30-28 at No. 11 UCLA (11-3, 2-2) early Sunday afternoon at the John Wooden Center.
Kyra Holt's 15 kills (.214) led the Cougars and she added eight digs and two blocks. Taylor Mims contributed nine kills (.375) and McKenna Woodford had eight kills (.250). WSU out-blocked UCLA 11 to six with Casey Schoenlein leading the match with five blocks, followed by Mims with four and Claire Martin with three. Kate Sommer and Tani Stephens combined for 22 of WSU's 46 digs. Haley MacDonald set up 37 assists, had eight digs and two blocks.
UCLA's Jordan Anderson led the match with 21 kills (.250) with Claire Felix adding four blocks and Taylor Formico having 13 digs. Rachel Inouye landed three aces as UCLA had six aces to WSU's two. Setter Ryann Chandler had 39 assists.
The Bruins took early leads in the first two sets and didn't look back, but WSU raced out to a seven-point lead in the third set. UCLA fought back and held off three Cougars set points, scoring four straight points to go ahead 25-24. Down but not out, WSU battled back and the third set was tied five more times until the home squad prevailed 30-28.
“This was a little disappointing because I thought once again that we weren't real consistent and I know we can play better. I'm disappointing that we're not showing our best every time we step out on the court,” Greeny said. “We struggled a little bit in the first set with our passing and then the start of the second set really got us way behind and that is always hard to dig out from. I thought we settled in with our passing at the end of the second and in the third it was much better, but overall, that inconsistency reared its ugly head again.”
The Cougars will play at home in Bohler Gym for the next two weeks, taking on No. 14 Arizona Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m., and No. 6 Arizona State Sunday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m.
