STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State's remaining doubles team fell in the third round of play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals Sunday at the Taube Family Tennis Center, ending the Cougars' stay at the event.
In the doubles main draw, WSU's No. 5 seeded duo of Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht came up short in the round of 16 to Fresno State's Anneka Watts and Sophie Watts, 8-6. The pairs' unbeaten streak ends at eight matches.
In Sunday consolation doubles play, Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh fell 8-4 to Elianne Douglas-Miron and Stacey Fung of Washington, while Victoria Matejevic and Holly Monahan were defeated 8-6 by California Poly's Bryn Bacharach and Ilana Oleynik.
In singles consolation play, Biryukova opened the day for the Cougars, posting a hard fought 7-6(6), 7-5 victory over Washington's Sophia Bott. Bashota followed by posting a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Galina Bykova of Fresno State, while Huynh defeated Washington's Kenadi Hance, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Barbora Michalkova came up big defeating Stephane Lin of California, 6-4, 7-5, while Matejevic fell to Gonzaga's Alex Bourguignon, 4-6, 7-6(7), 1-0(8).
The Cougars concluded their fall season at the ITA Northwest Regionals and will return home to prepare for the 2016 spring season, which begins in January.
