The Cougars shot their best round Tuesday, with a score of 297 (+9) in the third round for a total score of 916 (+52). No. 1 Illinois won the tournament with a three-round score of 865 (+1), while Pac-12 competitors Arizona State (+5, 869) and California (+14, 878) finished second and third, respectively.
“We played a lot better golf in similar conditions today,” WSU Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “Hopefully we learned a lot from this tournament.”
Sophomore Derek Bayley shot 3-over par (75) in the final round to bring his total score to 225 (+9), 15 strokes back of winner Jon Rahm of Arizona State (-6, 210). Bayley, who led the team through every round of play, tied for 37th with six other golfers.
“I know Derek didn't play the way he wanted to play, but he will bounce back. He is a great player and is better every time he tees it up,” Clegg said.
Freshman AJ Armstrong shot a third-round 75 (+3) to tie for 57th at 230 (+14), five strokes back of Bayley. After shooting a third-round 70 (-2), the lowest score of any Cougar this week, junior Nick Mandell moved 14 spots up the leaderboard to tie for 61st (+16, 232).
