Regan Leads Cougars at Cross Country Championships

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Senior Abby Regan's ninth-place finish was the highlight for the Washington State cross country teams on a rainy Friday morning at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland.
Regan, from Coonamble, NSW, Australia, ran the 6,000 meters course in a time of 20 minutes, 30 seconds. Other WSU women who scored and their finishes were: CharLee Linton 58th overall and 54th for scoring (21:32), Ashlie Standow 62nd/58th (21:37), Devon Bortfeld 67th/62nd (21:41), and Morgan Willson 68th/63rd (21:43). Cougars Emily Dwyer finished 84th (22:00), Abby Knight 97th (22:35), Steffie Pavey 99th (22:43), and Ruby Roberts 108th (23:00).
Arizona State's Shelby Houlihan was the women's individual champion in a time of 19:59, and the No. 3 Oregon women won the team title with 54 points. The rest of the women's teams finished in this order: 2. No. 11 Stanford 74, 3. No. 7 Colorado 82, 4. No. 17 Washington 93, 5. No. 29 UCLA 143, 6. Arizona State 158, 7. California 185, 8. Arizona 200, 9. Utah 241, 10. Washington State 246, 11. USC 336, and 12. Oregon State 342.
WSU redshirt senior Drew Jordan (Medford, Ore.) was the top Cougar men's finisher on the 8,000 meters course at 36th overall, 35th for scoring, in a time of 24:36. The other Cougar scorers included Sam Levora 45th/43rd (24:50), John Whelan 48th/45th (24:53), Lee George 54th/50th (25:04), and Forrest Shaffer 55th/5st (25:05). Jackson Haselnus finished 60th (25:12), and Conner Johnsen was 65th (25:28).
Oregon's Edward Cheserek repeated as the men's champion with a time of 23:22.1. No. 1 Colorado won the men's team title with 30 points followed by: 2. No. 2 Oregon 57, 3. No. 9 Stanford 60, 4. No. 12 Washington 87, 5. UCLA 168, 6. Arizona State 182, 7. California 189, 8. Arizona 206, and 9. Washington State 224. USC did not field a team this year while Utah and Oregon State do not have men's teams.
The next competition for the WSU cross country teams will be the NCAA West Regional Championships, Nov. 14, at Stanford.
