First Half Barrage Propels Cougars Past Utes

Box Score

SALT LAKE CITY – Washington State used four goals from four-different players in the first half to defeat Utah 4-2, Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 Conference women's soccer.

With the victory, the No. 24 Cougars (10-2-3, 5-2-1 Pac-12) swept their weekend road trip against the Pac-12's mountain schools.

“This was fantastic weekend for Washington State soccer,” Cougar Head Coach Steve Nugent said. “This is a very difficult road trip and for us to come away with six points says great things about the type of soccer we are playing right now. I thought our offense executed a high level in these two matches.”

The Cougars got the board early in fifth minute when Kourtney Guetlein sent a cross from the right to the back post and Kaitlyn Johnson finished for her second goal in as many matches. Johnson and Guetlein reversed roles in the 26th minute with Johnson feeding Guetlein in the box to put Washington State on top 2-0.

Utah (8-5-4, 1-5-2 Pac-12) answered when Avery Jenkins scored on a free kick at 35:50, slicing the Cougars' lead in half. Less than two minutes later, freshman Chelsea Harkins created a turnover in the Utes' box and fired a shot under the crossbar for her second goal of the season. Jocelyn Jeffers capped the first half scoring with a goal on free kick from 19 yards out at 41:29.

The Utes pressed up for much of the second half and Natalie Vukic notched a goal at 73:21 to account for the final score. The Utes earned six corner kicks to two while the Cougars held a 15-11 advantage in shots. Washington State put 12 of its attempts on frame.

The Cougars return home for their final-three regular season matches. The stretch begins with No. 1 UCLA visiting Pullman, Friday at 2 p.m.
