TACOMA, Wash. – After overnight rain soaked the Tacoma Golf and Country Club, the Washington State University women's golf team maintained its second-place position in the 13-team field at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational to finish 33-over par (897). The Cougars carded a 304 (+16) in the final round, the third-lowest score of the day, as WSU finished second only to No. 1 Washington (-1, 863).
“We are proud of how we played this week,” Cougar Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. “We went head-to-head with the No. 1 team in the country and competed with them for a large part of the tournament. We gave away a few shots in the end, but played well overall.”
WSU freshman Alivia Brown led the Cougars, recording the highest finish of her young, collegiate career. Brown notched her first top-10 finish, tying for seventh. Brown finished 3-over par (219) and four strokes back from tournament champion Jing Yan of Washington (-1, 215).
WSU junior Nani Yanagi also recorded a top-10 finish, carding a three-round 225 (+9) to tie for 10th. Senior Kristen Rue finished one stroke back from Yanagi, shooting 10-over (226) in the tournament. A strong opening round propelled Rue, as she shot 2-under with 14-straight holes at par. Rue tied for 12th place.
Fellow senior Lindsay Harmon finished tied for 14th after shooting 4-over (76) in the final round. Freshman Bree Wanderscheid, competing as an individual, tied Harmon. Wanderscheid shot even with par in the final round, bringing her total score to 227 (+11).
Junior Monica Huang, competing as an individual, notched her second top-25 finish of the season, carding a 231 (+15) and tying for 22nd. Sophomore Cherokee Kim, also competing as an individual, recorded the first top-25 finish of her career. Kim tied for 25th, shooting 16-over (232).
“This team continues to show a lot of growth and determination,” Kamimura said. “We look forward to competing next at UNLV.”
With two tournaments remaining in their fall season, the Cougars will return to action at UNLV's Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev., Oct. 26-28.
