LOS ANGELES - Washington State track and field decathlete Spencer Wordell scored a lifetime-best total of 3,710 points and is in fifth place Saturday while teammate Sean Harris was injured and had to drop out after the first day of competition at the Pac-12 Combined Events Championships at Cromwell Field at Loker Stadium on the USC campus.

Wordell, a redshirt junior from Spokane, surpassed his previous decathlon first day PR of 3,673 points achieved earlier this season at the Texas Relays. Saturday Wordell ran the 100m dash in a time of 10.90 seconds which was the fastest time of the day. He then long jumped 21-feet 2 3/4 inches (6.47m), threw the shot put a PR distance of 37-5 1/4 (11.41m), cleared a season-best high jump bar at 6-2 (1.88m), and ran the 400m dash in a PR time of 48.84.

"Spencer did pretty well all day long," Cougar Head Coach and multis coach Rick Sloan said. "He had a non-wind aided PR in the 100m, an outdoor PR in the shot put, a PR in the 400m as well as a first day PR. We just need to come out and keep grinding tomorrow, one event at a time, and keep putting up marks and he'll be in good shape."

WSU fifth-year senior Sean Harris (Kent, Wash.) started the day with a PR time in the 100m dash of 11.44 seconds, long jumped 20-11 1/4 (6.38m) and threw the shot put 40-1 1/2 (12.23m). Harris, who has cleared 6-5 in the high jump this season, injured his lower leg on his last warm-up jump and was not able to compete in the high jump Saturday afternoon, ending his competition this weekend.

"I feel so bad for Sean," Sloan said. "After he injured himself he had his leg taped but he tried to high jump but when he put his foot down he would fall into the bar. He will have another evaluation by the trainers here tomorrow."

Jeremy Taiwo of Washington is the decathlon leader among the 12 remaining competitors after recording a first day total of 4,200 points.

The final five events of the Pac-12 decathlon begin at 11 a.m. Sunday. The individual and relays portion of the championships will be held May 11 and 12 at USC.
