Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – Needing a victory to snap a two-match losing streak, the Washington State soccer team did just that, Friday afternoon.

The Cougars (10-3-3, 3-3-1 Pac-12) evened their Pac-12 record with a convincing 4-0 victory at Arizona (7-6-3, 2-5-0 Pac-12) with Nicole Setterlund scoring a pair of goals in the win.

“Today was one of our best team performances of the season,” Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. Everyone who played gave us great energy. We did a good job to go up early and our intensity at the start of the second half was tremendous.

Cara Wegner netted the game-winner in the 20th minute, her fourth goal of the season that gave Washington State a 1-0 lead at intermission.

The Cougars dominated play in the second half, earning nine corner kicks and notching three goals on 13 shots. Setterlund tallied a pair of goals and Mesa Owsley capped the scoring.

Setterlund's goals came 3:15 apart and came off Cougar corner kicks. The junior put Washington State up 2-0 in the 53rd minute on a header with an assist from Micaela Castain. She tacked on a goal in the 56th minute putting home a rebound off the post with Jocelyn Jeffers and Castain picking up the assists.

Owsley found the back of the net with a free kick from 35 yards out in the 67th minute to give the Cougars four goals in a conference road match for the first time since 2002 (at Arizona).

McAlpine added, “To get Kayla Johnson back and Cara Wegner back at full strength makes us a much more deep and dangerous team. I am so happy for Mesa Owsley. To score a goal on her birthday is special.”

Washington State takes on Arizona State, Sunday at 1 p.m.
