PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State sophomore Kristen Rue shot 4-under par (68) in the final round of the WSU Cougar Cup at Washington State University's Palouse Ridge Golf Course to win the tournament's individual title. The WSU women's golf team fell to third place in Tuesday's final round and finished 19-over par.

Rue made five birdies in the final 18 holes of the competition, including birdies on three of the last four holes. Her 68 in the last round put her at 4-under for the tournament and gave her the outright lead by four strokes. This marks the first tournament victory of Rue's career.

"Kristen has been working hard and really fighting tough," Washington State Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. "She has been due for a win with her caliber of talent and her determination. It was exciting to see. That first win is a big one, so this is exciting for her."

"I just kept it steady," Rue said. "I played for pars and the birdies happened. It's nice to get the extra confidence boost that all the hard work in practice is paying off."

Junior Mallory Kent joined Rue in the top 10. Kent carded a 71 (-1) Tuesday and finished tied for sixth (+2, 218). She tied with Victoria Fallgren of Gonzaga.

The Cougar women fell to Pac-12 foe and tournament champion California by six strokes. The women's team lost second place to regional opponent Gonzaga by just one stroke. Among the 11 teams ousted by WSU were regional adversaries Idaho (fifth) and Eastern Washington (14th).

"California is the reigning Pac-12 champion and they were playing on our home turf, but we competed," Kamimura said. "We left a lot of shots out there, but to shoot 10-over as a team (in the final round) and post three rounds under 300 - it feels good to be competing."

The next competition for the Cougar women's team will be the Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational hosted by New Mexico State. The tournament will be held October 8-10 in Las Cruces, N.M.
