COLBERT, Wash. -- Washington State seniors Andrew Kimpel and Caroline Austin grabbed the individual titles and the No. 26-ranked Cougar men's cross country team won at the Clash of the Inland Northwest meet at Mead High School Saturday morning.

The Cougar men dominated the field in the 6k race with the top seven places being claimed by WSU even though several were competing unattached. Senior Andrew Kimpel (Spokane) won in a time of 18:25.0 followed by Drew Jordan (18:25.6), Todd Wakefield (18:29.6), Andrew Gonzales (18:30.0), Lee George (18:30.7), Jono Lafler (18:35.9) and Justin Englund (18:36.3).

WSU's men's team was the overall winner with 28 points, followed by Gonzaga (30), Idaho (87), Whitworth (100) and Eastern Washington (131).

"The guys ran hard but did not run all-out today. They ran controlled so finishing one through seven with our unattached guys in there was good to see," Cougar coach Tim Riley said. "Andrew Kimpel and Drew looked great."

Cougar senior Caroline Austin (Chehalis, Wash.) won the women's 4k in a time of 14:09.6 with WSU's Ruby Roberts sixth (14:47.0) and Courtney Zalud seventh (15:05.5). The WSU women's team (42) finished second to Gonzaga (22) followed by Idaho (69), Whitworth (114), and Eastern Washington (124).

"I was really happy with Caroline's race. She ran well and a `W' is always nice," Riley said. "Courtney had a really great race today. Ruby looked a little flat but she'll get there. Emily Dwyer looked great and Abby Knight went out a little too hard but she'll get there. Our freshmen are tough and we look for that so it was good to see what they can do in a race. There were quite a few fans but not like the big time atmosphere we'll see at other races this fall so it's hard to get in that rhythm."

"We found out what we need to work on and what works in a race," Riley said. "We just started to get into our training cycle so in a couple of weeks the bodies will be more in rhythm with what to expect on Saturdays."

The next race for the Cougar women harriers will be September 15 at the West Coast Conference Preview in Portland, Ore.
