STANFORD -- Several Washington State track and field athletes reached season-bests and lifetime-best marks Friday afternoon and evening at the Stanford Invitational.
In the men's sprints, Brett Blanshan ran a 100m dash prelim time of 10.71 seconds, ninth place which advanced to the final where he also finished ninth (10.80). Greg Hornsby's prelim time of 10.86w was 12th out of the 56 racers. Jacoby Sealby made his outdoor season debut with a 400m dash time of 48.26 for 10th, and Ryan Barrett ran a time of 49.78 for 33rd.
Ramsey Hopkins (junior, San Diego) qualified for the men's 110 hurdles Saturday final after running a time of 14.64 in the prelims, the eighth-fastest time of the four heats. Also running in the prelims were Aric Walden (14.71, 11th), Josiah Sims (14.99, 16th), and Garrett Gerling (PR 15.03, 17th). J Hopkins was the top collegian and overall runner-up in the 400m hurdles in a time of 52.38 with teammates Robert Shelby seventh in a PR time of 54.07, Dana Wells 13th in a time of 55.27, and Rashaun Johnson 16th in 55.36.
In the top two sections of the men's 1500m race, Joe Abbott ran a PR time of 3-minutes, 44.22 seconds. Lee George won his 1500m section with a PR time of 3:47.54 while David Hickerson took third in the same section in a time of 3:50.28.
In the men's 5000m, Drew Jordan ran a time of 13:59.25 for seventh in the second section and Andrew Kimpel ran a 5000m time of 14:08.91 for 10th place in the third section.
High jumpers Shaw Swartz and Ross VanZanten both cleared 6-feet, 9 inches (2.06m), a season-best for Swartz and a PR for VanZanten.
Joe Bartlett threw the discus 163-8 (49.88m) for 10th in the invitational section.
After running a PR time of 11.87 in the women's 100m dash prelims, Cindy Robinson finished eighth in the final with another PR time of 11.83. Shawna Fermin was the third in the 400m dash with a time of 54.18 while Bria'una Watley's time of 57.71 was 21st and Holly DeHart's time of 57.97 was 24th.
In the women's 1500m, Ruby Roberts finished fifth in her section of the women's 1500m with a time of 4:28.45 while Caroline Austin finished fifth in her section with a PR time of 4:29.37.
In the women's 100m hurdles prelims, Candii McFarland ran a time of 14.22 (15th), Shaquana Logan ran a time of 14.39 (21st), and Morgan Clem clocked in at 14.45 (tied 22nd). Shaquana Logan ran a 400m hurdles time of 1:03.85 (19th) with Brittnay Crabb's time of 1:04.94 (23rd) and McFarland's time of 1:05.23 (25th). Logan later long jumped 18-3 (5.56m) for fourth in the collegiate section.
Lauran Johnson high jumped a height of 5-7 1/4 (1.71m), equaling her PR, in the women's collegiate section. Carly Fitzpatrick and Kelsey Bueno tied for ninth in the women's collegiate section of the pole vault, both clearing 11-3 3/4 (3.45m).
Competition continues at the Stanford Invitational Saturday and another contingent of Cougars will compete at the SCC WAR V meet in Spokane.
