WALNUT, Calif. -- Washington State University steeplechasers Caroline Austin and Andrew Gonzales ran lifetime-best times Thursday night at the 54th Annual Mt. SAC Relays Distance Carnival and Invitational Elite/Olympic Development/University Invitational races at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.
Austin, a junior from Chehalis, Wash., ran a PR and the fifth-fastest time in WSU women's 3000m steeplechase records with a 10-minute, 28.91 seconds finish in the Open-A University/Open race. Austin, who chopped nearly three and a half minutes off her previous lifetime-best time, finished sixth in the race.
In the men's 3000m steeplechase Open-A University/Open race, Gonzales, a redshirt sophomore from Kennewick, Wash., ran a PR time of 8:55.81 for eighth place.
Also competing Thursday, in the men's 1500m University/Open, Joe Abbott took 14th with a time of 3:47.22 followed by Cougars Lee George (3:49.33 - 27th), Todd Wakefield (3:50.07 - 33rd) and Matt Cronrath (3:51.03 - 46th), among the 112 competitors in the 11 sections of the race. Ruby Roberts ran in the women's 1500m University/Open in a time of 4:35.84, 91st out of 124 runners.
The Mt. SAC Relays continue all day Friday with Cougars competing in both field and running events.
