STANFORD, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team sits in a tie for 14th place after the first round of the U.S. Intercollegiate, Friday.
Junior Hank Frame carded a 1-over (71) to lead the Cougars through day one. Frame shot an eagle on the 16th hole to help him to his current standing of tied for 25th place individually.
As a team, Washington State recorded a first round score of 294 (+14), 22-shots back from current leader Oregon (272, -8).
"We really need to focus on getting more birdies on the Par 5s," was the advice of Cougar head coach Garrett Clegg. "The course is playing great, with a couple of hard holes. We just need to be better at taking advantage of the easier holes."
Other members of the Washington State team include senior Trent Sanders, tied for 56th (74, +4), freshman Michael Anderson, tied for 56th (74, +4), sophomore Kent Hagen, tied for 69th (75, +5), and redshirt-freshman Sang Lee, tied for 83rd (79, +9).
Clegg added, "We still have 36 holes to play. We still have the opportunity to play a great tournament."
The Cougars play round two Saturday, with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m., on the first and 10th holes.
