LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Washington State women's golf team, led by junior Mallory Kent, completed the first round of the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate at the New Mexico State Golf Course in third place. The team shot a collective score of 8-over (296) and is six shots back from the leading team, Idaho, with two rounds left in the tournament.
The Cougar women's team is ranked 32nd nationally, the highest ranking of all teams competing in the tournament.
Kent's mark of 1-under (71) for the day tied her for third place on the player leaderboard. She is tied with four other competitors. Sophomore Kristen Rue joined Kent in the tournament's top 10 after round one for the Cougar women. Rue tied for t0th at the conclusion of Monday's round after posting a score to par of 1-over (73). She also tied for the most birdies in the first round of the competition (five).
Sophomore Lindsay Harmon finished Monday tied for 17th (+2, 74). Kent and Harmon were the only two competitors in the tournament to card eagles in the first round.
The Cougar women finished in third place behind Kansas (second, +6) and Idaho (first, +2). Host school New Mexico State is among the 10 teams WSU bested in the first round.
There are two rounds remaining in the tournament, with one round to be played both Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's second round will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Results will be available live during tournament play at golfstat.com, and will also be posted online at wsucougars.com after the completion of the round.
