ALBUQUERQUE - Solid performances and good marks were produced by the select contingent of Washington State track and field competitors Saturday at the University of New Mexico Cherry and Silver Indoor Track & Field Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Leading the Cougar women in field events, sophomore Kelsey Bueno (Kent, Wash.) was the runner-up in the pole vault with a lifetime-best clearance at 12-feet, 3 1/2 inches (3.75m); the ninth-best mark in school history.

"It's good to be back to where I left off at the end of last year before I was injured," Bueno said. "I've had good practices and it's good to be at this height by the second meet of the year."

Cougar jumps coach Matt McGee said, "Kelsey is just scratching the surface and starting to see the result of the determination she's shown all year in training."

Mary Barnett (soph., Hermiston, Ore.) claimed third place in the shot put with a season-best throw of 44-6 3/4 (13.58m). Christine Rice (junior, Ridgefield, Wash.) tied for third in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-6 (1.68m).

WSU's Joe Bartlett (senior, Reno) took second place in the men's shot put with a heave of 55-10 1/4 (17.03m). Freshman PJ Benedictus (Renton, Wash.) long jumped 22-7 3/4 (6.90m) for 10th and triple jumped 46-0 1/2 (14.03m) for 13th.

The Cougar men made noise on the track with Jacob Sealby's 400m dash time of 47.85 being a PR for the sophomore from Wenatchee and the second-best on the day. Greg Hornsby (senior, Moreno Valley, Calif.) ran a 60m dash time of 6.94 and qualified for the final but a sore hamstring held him to the sidelines. Ramsey Hopkins' (junior, San Diego) 60m hurdles time of 8.15 was third in the final with Garrett Gerling (redshirt freshman, Walla Walla) finishing ninth in a time of 8.35 after running a PR time of 8.32 in the prelims.

The WSU men's 4x400m relay team of J Hopkins, Sealby, Brandon Dawson and Rashaun Johnson ran a time of 3:18.03 for second place.

Candii McFarland (freshman, Las Vegas) placed seventh and Shaquana Logan finished 11th in the 60m hurdles final with McFarland running 8.71 in the final and Logan running a prelim time of 8.67. Other notable marks for the Cougar women on the track included Cindy Robinson's 7.74 in the 60m dash (16th), Shawna Fermin's 400m dash time of 56.94 (10th), and Courtney Zalud's 800m time of 2:18.41 (6th). The 1600m relay team of Logan, McFarland, Chanel James and Robinson ran a time of 3:57.28 (9th).

The Washington State track and field teams next compete at the Cougar Indoor, a scoring meet against UCLA, Idaho, Montana and Utah State, Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28 at the WSU Indoor Facility.
