ALBUQUERQUE - Washington State's J Hopkins led a trio of Cougars in the rarely contested men's 400m hurdles during the first day of the University of New Mexico Cherry and Silver Indoor Track & Field Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Hopkins ran the intermediate hurdles in a time of 52.27 seconds with Dana Well second in a time of 54.38 and Garrett Gerling third in a time of 54.76.
Several WSU track and field athletes reached personal-best marks Friday evening. In the women's 200m dash four Cougars reached PRs led by Chanel James' eighth place finish in 24.82 seconds. Cindy Robinson was ninth (24.83), Shawn Fermin 16th (PR 24.96), Candii McFarland 22nd (PR 25.22) and Shaquana Logan 46th (PR 25.78).
Brett Blanshan led WSU in the men's 200m dash with a time of 21.92 (9th) followed by Greg Hornsby's 22.09 (13th), Jacob Sealby's 22.16 (15th), Rashaun Johnson's 22.42 (21st), and Brandon Dawson's 22.66 (27th).
In Friday field events, Shawn Swartz claimed second place in the men's high jump after clearing the bar at 6-feet, 10 1/4 (2.09m). Jake Baertlein and John Brenteson nearly reached PRs with their pole vault clearance at 16-1 3/4 (4.92m) to tie for third in the competition.
The Cherry & Silver Invite concludes Saturday in Albuquerque.
