BREMERTON, Wash. - Washington State men's golf team tied for second at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club, Tuesday. Host Washington took first place in the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational with a team score of 293 (+5).
In the 18-hole tournament, shortened because of rain Monday, the Cougars tied with Fresno State, both with a team score of 299 (+11). That score was good enough for Washington State to finish ahead of Pepperdine which finished 25th nationally a year ago.
Only four players in the tournament finished under par, two of which are Cougars. Jarrett Foote and Trent Sanders both finished at 1-under (71). Sanders was tied for the lead with tournament winner Chris Williams of Washington coming into the 18th hole, where he double bogied, landing him in a three-way tie for second place, along with Foote. It was a career-best finish for Foote and Sanders earned his 12th career top 10.
"Exciting" was how Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg explained the day. "We were right there with just a few holes left. We didn't win, but we put ourselves in a great place."
Clegg added, "Our overall the team play improved since our last outing, and many of the players had great performances. I would have loved to have more golf."
Washington State had five players finish in the top-10, including Sang Lee, Branden Dalton and Hank Frame, who finished in a five-way tie for eighth, along with three-time NCAA Regional participant Bhavik Patel from Fresno State. The tie for eighth marks Lee's first-career top-10, Frame's fifth career top-10, and Dalton's career best finish.
The Cougars return to action Oct. 3-4 when they travel to Stateline, Nev., to compete in the Wolf Pack Classic.
