PULLMAN, Wash. - Chad Arnold pitched seven innings of one-run ball and Washington State defeated UNLV 4-3 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

Arnold (2-3) gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out five. The redshirt-senior threw 72 of his 111 pitches for strikes. Paris Shewey notched his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

"Chad Arnold gave us a great start tonight," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "It was definitely his best start of the season and what we needed to give us a chance to win a series."

Washington State (20-21) jumped on UNLV (29-19) starter Joe Robinson (5-5) for three runs in the second. Taylor Ard led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. After Adam Nelubowich was hit by a pitch, Ard was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Collin Slaybaugh.

Nate Blackham, making his second-career start, singled in the first run of the game and stole second in front of Trace Tam Sing's two-run single that gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, Slaybaugh singled, stole second, moved to third on a single by Blackham and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tam Sing.

The Rebels scored their run off Arnold in the fifth. UNLV loaded the bases on a pair of walks sandwiched around a double. The run came home on an infield single by Trevor Kirk.

In the eighth, the Rebels' Travis Feiner hit a two-run home run off Cougar reliever Richie Ochoa and closed the deficit to 4-3 before J.D. Leckenby came on to record the final out of the eighth.

The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
