TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State used a 14-hit attack to defeat visiting Washington State 10-4 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Sunday.
With the victory, the No. 10 Sun Devils (25-9, 8-4 Pac-10) completed a three-game sweep of the Cougars (14-17, 2-10 Pac-10).
Arizona State scored three times in the second aided by a pair of Cougar errors. Another Washington State error in the third resulted in an unearned run against James Wise (3-4) and a 4-0 Sun Devils' advantage.
Washington State cut its deficit in half with two runs in the fifth against Arizona State's Jake Barrett (4-3). Trace Tam Sing and Collin Slaybaugh drew back-to-back walks to open the frame and each moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Johnson. Cody Bartlett followed with a two-run single to make the score 4-2.
In the sixth, the Sun Devils put the game away with five runs on six hits against Cougar relievers J.D. Leckenby and Paris Shewey. Arizona State picked up another run in the seventh against Shewey before Matt Argyropoulos capped the scoring with a two-run double in the eighth for the Cougars.
Washington State travels to Corvallis, Ore., to open a three-game series with Pac-10 leader Oregon State, Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
