Freshman Mallory Kent led Washington State University during first-round play at the 2011 PING/ASU Invitational Friday, hosted by Arizona State and played on the par 72, 6,230-yard Karsten Golf Course.
In a field that features 13 of the 17 teams ranked in Golf Week's Top 50, the Cougars shot a combined 315 and concluded the round in 17th place. No. 2 UCLA holds a five-stroke lead over No. 1 USC after firing a 276, 12-under par. USC (281), No. 26 Texas (286), No. 10 Arizona (289) and No. 32 Stanford (290) round out the top five.
Kent shot a 78 (+6) Friday to finish in a tie for 73rd. Three other Cougars are just a shot back as senior Allison Travis, junior Kristen Allard and sophomore Ali Thompson each shot 79 (+7) and are tied for 79th. Sophomore Emma Betland concluded her first 18 holes with an 80 (+8), placing her in a tie for 87th heading into the second round.
Round 2 of the PING/ASU Invitational will be played Saturday.
