Cougar Men's Golf Wraps Up Fall Season

FAIRFAX, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team finished 11th in the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle, Wednesday. Played at the CordeValle Golf Resort in Gilroy, Calif., the Cougars trailed the 11 school field, comprised of seven nationally ranked teams, including four top 10 teams.

Despite finishing 5-over in the final round, USC finished the 54 holes at 8-under (1057), earning the title of Tournament Champion. Host UCLA finished second, four shots back from the leader.

The top Cougar finisher was senior Trent Sanders. Sanders played plus five for the day to end at 10-over (223), tied for 30th.

As a team Washington State ended the three-day tournament at 81-over (1146). Other Cougars competing were junior Hank Frame, tied for 50th (+15, 228); freshman Michael Anderson, tied for 62nd (+19, 232); senior Branden Dalton, tied for 64th (+20, 233); sophomore Jarrett Foote, 68th (+24, 237); and senior Paul Mitzel72nd, (+31, 244).

Both Dalton and Mitzel posted their lowest score of the tournament in the third round. Mitzel carded his lowest round score as a member of Washington State's starting lineup.

"What we need to work on is achieving `competitive greatness,'" stated head coach Garrett Clegg. "We need to leave everything we have out there, and the results will be the results. Whether we're the best team or not, we need to compete to the best of our abilities."

The Cougars take a brake until Feb. 27-28 when they host the ReBath Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz.
