SAN MARTIN, Calif. - Washington State senior Trent Sanders recorded three birdies during the second round and is tied for 25th with 18 holes to play in the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle, hosted by UCLA.
Sanders shot a 3-over 74, Tuesday and sits 5-over in the tournament. Freshman Michael Anderson was 5-over 76, and is one shot back of Sanders, tied for 29th.
"Trent has worked really hard on and off the course," Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. "He is making better decisions and is being aggressive at the right time. I can't say enough about Michael. Most freshmen have ups and downs, but he has been very consistent and that is impressive."
A strong wind contributed to higher scores in day two of competition. Only tournament-leader USC (-3) was under par as a team. The Trojans are pacing the 11-team field at 13-under (697). UCLA is second, 12 shots back of its arch-rival.
Other Cougars competing in the tournament are junior Hank Frame (T-47th, +10), senior Branden Dalton (T-64th, +15), sophomore Jarrett Foote (T-68th, +17) and senior Paul Mitzel (72nd, +25).
Washington State is at 763 (+53) with the final round scheduled for an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start, Wednesday.
