BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Washington State heptathletes had top four finishes and Cougar decathlete Kyle Schauble reached a lifetime-best total as the track and field competitors completed a chilly second day of competition Thursday at the 14th Annual Cal Multi Meet at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field in Berkeley.

Jasmine Johnson-McKeown (freshman, San Bernardino) placed second in the heptathlon with 4,876 points and Angela Jensen (junior, Tacoma) finished fourth with a total of 4,767 points. Cassie Merkley of Idaho State won the "A" group heptathlon with 5,246 points.

During Thursday's events, Johnson-McKeown long jumped 17-feet, 3/4 inches (5.20m), threw the javelin 105-11 (32.29m), and ran the 800m in a time of 2-minutes, 31.12 seconds. Jensen long jumped 16-11 1/4 (5.16m), threw the javelin 98-9 (30.09m), and ran an 800m time of 2:29.61.

"Both Jasmine and Angela did a nice job at this competition," Cougar Head Coach and multi-events coach Rick Sloan said. "They performed events well enough to be encouraging for later in the season. I expect them both to reach over 5,000 points by Pac-10 time."

Kyle Schauble (senior, Kennewick) placed fifth in the "A" group decathlon with a lifetime-best of 6,802 points. Ramsey Hopkins (freshman, San Diego) tallied 6,259 points for 11th place. Mark Jellison (unattached) won the decathlon with 7,414 points.

Schauble ran the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.19, threw the discus 110-4 (33.64m), pole vaulted his PR of 13-9 1/4 (4.20m), threw a PR in the javelin of 179-5 (54.70m), and ran the 1500m in a time of

Hopkins ran the high hurdles in a PR time of 15.32, threw the discus a PR distance of 115-9 (35.29m), cleared the pole vault bar at a height of 12-1 1/2 (3.70m), threw the javelin with a PR mark of 156-0 (47.54m),

"For Ramsey this was a learning experience and was getting a feel for what's involved in decathlon competition," Sloan said. "He did not perform up to par in the first day but did a much better job today. He reached several PRs in the competition. Kyle had solid stuff but the cool weather today might have kept him from a better showing. It was good solid work all the way through the competition but these guys will have to take it up a notch and be better all the way across board come Pac-10 Championship time."
