COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Washington State high jumpers Trent Arrivey and Holly Parent won their events with NCAA qualifying marks Saturday at the Texas A&M Challenge Meet at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center in College Station, Texas.

Arrivey, a senior from Woodinville, Wash., won the men's high jump with a clearance at 7-feet, 1/4 inch (2.15m), which is an NCAA Provisional Qualifying height but Arrivey reached automatic qualifying last weekend with his leap of 7-4 1/4 (2.24m). WSU's Ryan Deese tied for sixth place in the high jump with a leap of 6-7 (2.01m) and Ramsey Hopkins cleared 6-4 3/4 (1.95m) for 11th.

Freshman Holly Parent (Victoria, British Columbia) won the women's high jump with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 5-10 (1.78m), and Cougar freshman Christine Rice (Ridgefield, Wash.) tied for fourth after clearing the bar at 5-6 1/2 (1.69m). Parent becomes the first WSU woman to reach qualifying standards this year.

Lisa Egami finished third in the women's mile with a season-best time of 4-minutes, 47.92 seconds, just 92/100s of a second off the NCAA PQ time. Egami also ran on the Distance Medley Relay with Veronica Elseroad-Wall, Courtney Zalud and Caroline Austin for sixth place with a time of 11:41.53.

In the men's long jump, Stephan Scott-Ellis took second place after leaping 23-6 (7.16m) while Hopkins finished fourth (22-3 3/4-6.80m), and Kyle Schauble was fifth (21-6 3/4 -6.57m). Schauble also took fifth place in 60m hurdles in a time of 8.45.

Sophomore women weight throwers Jacob Weintraub took fifth in the men's shot put with a throw of 52-10 1/4 (16.11m) and Joe Barlett was sixth with a toss of 52-5 1/2 (15.99m).

Two Cougar women contributed sixth-place points. Kendall Mays cleared a season-best pole vault height of 12-7 1/4 (3.84m) for sixth, and Anna Layman finished sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:09.77, just off her indoor lifetime-best of 2:09.41 and just off the NCAA Provisional Qualifying of 2:09.00. Caroline Austin was 15th in the 800m with a PR time of 2:14.99.

Jeshua Anderson finished seventh in the men's 400m dash (47.83) while Reny Follett took 11th (48.62). Luke Lemenager ran the 800m in a time of 1:52.30 for eighth place.

In the 60m dash prelims, Marlon Murray was ninth (6.91), Brett Blanshan 11th (6.94), and Greg Hornsby 15th (6.97). Hornsby came back and finished eighth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.84 and Blanshan took 10th place with a time of 21.89. The men's 4x400m relay team took seventh place in a time of 3:17.88 with the squad comprised of Ryan Barrett, Follett, Hornsby and Lemenager.

Veronica Elseroad-Wall finished fourth in the rarely-raced 600-yard run with a time of 1:24.25, and Courtney Zalud was seventh in a time of 1:25.62.

In the women's 60m dash prelims, Princess Joy Griffey finished 11th (7.58) and placed 13th in the 200m with a time of 24.78. Angela Jensen ran the 200m in a time of 25.96 (20th) and Shaquana Logan ran a time of 26.15 (21st). Brianne Brown took 19th in the 400m dash (58.07) and Shawna Fermin finished 20th (58.19). The WSU women's 4x400m relay team of Fermin, Layman, Elseroad-Wall and Brown finished seventh in a time of 3:42.30.

Angela Jensen just missed the final in the 60m hurdles prelims, after running 8.77, the same time as Arkansas' Brittany Hyter's but Hyter's time was actually 8.762 while Jensen's time was 8.770, leaving the Cougar ninth and out of the final. Logan's 8.92 time was 16th in the hurdles prelims.

Candace Missouri long jumped 17-8 (5.38m) and Logan leaped 17-0 1/2 (5.19m) for 12th and 13th, respectively.

In men's distance racing, Jono Lafler finished 17th in the 3000m (8:24.19), and Dan Geib took second place in Friday night 5000m with a time of 14:24.39.

"Holly Parent did a nice job today, winning the high jump with a provisional mark," Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "In the running events, Veronica Elseroad-Wall had an outstanding weekend. She ran a 55.4 leg on the distance medley relay, she ran a 55.3 split on the 4x4 relay, and sandwiched in-between was a 1:24.25 time in the 600-yard run. I thought this was a nice, competitive weekend for her. Lisa Egami's mile race was a highlight for the Cougs. Courtney Zalud did a nice job and ran a 2:13 split on the DMR. Most of our distance runners did a nice job here for where they are in their training. The women's 4x4 relay really ran well and competed; Brianne Brown ran a 55.37 anchor leg and Anna Layman's 54.52 and that was after running her 800m race in 2:09. That 3:42 is a pretty good mark for us.

"This was a good experience for us to get on a great facility and to put ourselves up against teams that we don't see very often. Some of our kids competed up and did a nice job performing here. I think this experience will be helpful to us as we move forward now in the season. This meet sets a tone and people understand what their world is now, competing in the NCAA."

The two-day meet featured scoring by conference, with three teams from each of the Big 12 (Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas), SEC (Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina), and Pac-10 (Oregon, Stanford, WSU) conferences. In men's conference standings, the Big 12 captured the meet with 297 points followed by the Pac-10 with 235 and the SEC with 144. The Big 12 also won the women's conference competition with 260 points, with the Pac-10 second (237) and SEC third (192). Because of the ice storm that hit the southern part of the country, a part of the Arkansas men's and women's team were not able to fly in for the meet.

The Cougars will compete in the Moscow Kibbie Dome next weekend for the Vandal Indoor Meet, Friday, Feb. 5, and at the Runners Soul Open, Saturday, Feb. 6.
