PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State sophomore Cassie Whitfield won the women's 20-pound weight throw with a lifetime-best mark of 56-feet, 8 1/2 inches (17.28m) Friday night at the Eighth WSU Open Indoor, a two-day meet held at WSU's Indoor Performance Facility.

Whitfield, from Puyallup, Wash., bested the 10-woman field by six feet and bettered her PR by four feet. She threw the fifth-best weight throw distance in WSU women's history, surpassing teammate Kjirsten Jensen's 2009 mark of 56-1 1/4 (17.10m). Jensen did not compete in the WSU Open meet but is expected to return to action next weekend at the Cougar Indoor Meet.

Idaho's James Rogan, competing unattached, won the men's 35-pound weight throw with a mark of 61-10 1/2 (18.86m), edging Ben Wood (Idaho) who finished second with a throw of 59-7 (18.16m).

The WSU Open continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the remaining field and all the running events. Spectator admission is free of charge.
