PULLMAN, Wash. -- Idaho's Matthew Wauters won the men's 35-pound weight throw with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 65-feet, 4 1/4 inches (19.92m), Friday night at the Seventh Annual WSU Open Indoor, a two-day meet held at WSU's Indoor Practice Facility.

This is the fifth consecutive year Wauters, a senior who competed during his redshirt season, has won the WSU Open weight throw. He twice set the meet record including his 2008 finish at 68-10 (20.98m). WSU senior Phil MacArthur had the second-best collegiate mark with his throw of 61-3 1/2 (18.68m). George Mathews of Hayden Lake, Idaho, broke his own American masters record and set the World masters record with his throw of 64-5 (19.33m) using a steel weight.

Erica Chaney, competing unattached, won the women's 20-pound weight throw on her final throw of the night reaching 52-6 3/4 (16.02m). A trio of Washington State freshmen advanced to the women's final with Kjirsten Jensen (Arlington, Wash.) finishing third with a throw of 49-10 1/2 (15.20m), Cassie Whitfield (Puyallup, Wash.) placing seventh with a best toss of 45-5 3/4 (13.86m), and competing unattached, Anne Barnett (Burlington, Wash.) finished eighth with a throw of 44-3 1/4 (13.49m).

The WSU Open continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the remaining field and all the running events. Spectator admission is free of charge.
