Watch Air Force-WSU Highlights
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's tennis team completed a sweep of Air Force and Idaho Saturday evening, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
In the morning match against Air Force, the No. 44 (ITA) Cougars found themselves with an early lead after they won the first two doubles matches earning them the point.
Ioana Oprea and Elisabeth Fournier set the tone for WSU with an, 8-2, victory over Christen Monreal and Tahlia Smoke of Air Force. Teammates Ekaterina Kamendova and Aleksandra Cekic clinched the doubles point for the Cougars by defeating Christen Abayan and Erlyn Rudico of Air Force, 8-3.
In singles action, Ioana Oprea earned the first victory for the Cougars, pushing the lead to 2-0. Oprea downed Air Force's Allie Chermel 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3. Ekaterina Kamendova earned her first duel match victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Christine Abayan at the No. 1 singles position.
At No. 4 singles, senior Aleksandra Cekic put up a tough fight against Air Force's Tahlia Smoke, but ended up falling short as she was defeated 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Elisabeth Fournier posted an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory over Air Force's Christen Monreal, clinching the match for the Cougars at, 4-1.
In other singles action, Marina Nicolas outlasted Sarah Cassman and posted a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Fellow teammate Jessica Gomez finished off the impressive win with a 6-3, 6-4 win, over the Falcon's Katrina Eromin.
In the night cap of the double-header, WSU earned a 6-1 victory over the visiting Vandals.
WSU jumped out to an early lead as Ekaterina Kamendova and Aleksandra Cekic downed Idaho's Maria Perevoshchikova and Daniela Cohen, 8-5, at No. 1. Elisabeth Fournier and Ioana Oprea clinched the doubles point with an impressive, 8-3, victory over Silvia Irimescu and Barbara Maciocha at No. 2 doubles.
The Cougars went on to win five of six singles matches, earning the victory. Freshman Elisabeth Fournier continued her strong play, improving her record to 11-1 with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Maria Perevoshchikova. Fellow freshman Ioana Oprea also continued her impressive play with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Idaho's Sofya Korotaeva.
Sophomore Ekaterina Kamendova clinched the match for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Idaho's Silvia Irimescua at the No. 1 position.
The Cougars return to action January 21, 2009, against Weber State in Ogden, Utah.
