Colorado Springs, Colo. - The No. 43 (ITA) Washington State Cougars tennis team (5-1 overall) was swept by the No. 45 University of Denver (5-0 overall) in the third of three matches this weekend, Sunday, February 3, at Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Pioneers jumped out to the early 1-0 advantage after winning two of three in doubles play. At No. 1, Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova defeated Mallory Voelker and Julia Bauregger 8-3, while Aleksandra Cekic and Aleksandra Stefanova fought tough, but in the end, fell to Bhavani Tirumurti and Ute Schnoy 9-7 at No. 2.
In singles play, the Cougars experienced much of the same as they did in doubles as they lost all six singles matches. At No. 1, Ekaterina Burduli suffered her first dual match loss as she fell to Mallory Voelker in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
Ekaterina Kamendova and Aleksandra Stefanova suffered similar fates in the No.2 and No. 3 slots. Ute Schnoy got the best of Kamendova capturing the 7-5, 6-2 victory. Annette Aksdal earned the singles victory over Stefanova, 6-0, 6-3.
The University of Denver captured the final three singles matches to complete the sweep against the Cougars.
The Cougars return home February 15, as they face off against Utah in the first of seven straight home matches at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
