No. 44 WSU Splits Double Header

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's team fell to No. 3 Stanford, 5-1, in the first match of a double header, then they swept Gonzaga, 7-0, in the second match Saturday, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The No. 44 (ITA) Washington State Cougars (9-3 overall 0-2 Pac-10) found themselves down 1-0 after Stanford (7-1 overall 2-1 Pac-10) won the first two double matches to earn the point.

Doubles tandem Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova fell to Hilary Barte and Lindsey Burdette, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot, while Aleksandra Cekic and Jessica Gomez were downed by Whitney Deason and Jennifer Yen, 8-3 at No. 2. Teammates Bianca Selaru and Aleksandra Stefanova were up 6-4 when the match was called at No.3.,br>

In singles play, senior Aleksandra Stefanova secured the lone point for the Cougars as she outlasted Lindsey Burdette of Stanford 1-6, 6-4, 10-8. With the win, Stefanova pushes her dual match record to 5-5 on the season.

At No. 3, Freshman Ekaterina Kamendova put up a fight against No. 9 Jessica Nguyen, but ended up falling short as she was defeated 6-2, 6-4.

No. 91 Ekaterina Burduli fell to 20-4 on the season, with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to No. 49 Hilary Barte of Stanford at No. 1. The loss is only the second for Burduli in dual match play.

The match at No. 4 went unfinished.

In the second match of the day against Gonzaga, the Cougars came out strong winning two of the three doubles matches to win the point.

Aleksandra Stefanova and Bianca Selaru started things off for the Cougars with an 8-4 victory over Clare Dodge and Danielle Farmer at No. 3. Junior Aleksandra Cekic and freshman Jessica Gomez picked up the second win as they downed Sydney Lederhouse and her partner Erin Humphrey 8-4 at No. 2.

In singles play, the Cougars did not lose a set as they swept singles play. Bianca Selaru set the tempo for WSU with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Gonzaga's Sydney Lederhouse at No. 4. Freshman Ekaterina Kamendova picked up her seventh dual match victory after she downed Clare Dodge in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3.

At No. 1, Senior Ekaterina Burduli continued her strong play as she picked up her 10 victory of dual match play as she posted a 6-1, 6-1, win over Emily Anderson at No. 1. The win gives Burduli 84 career single victories which is second all-time and just three away from career leader Erica Perkins.

Aleksandra Stefanova picked up her second victory of the day as she downed Aglaya Kokurina, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Aleksandra Cekic grabbed her seventh dual match win with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rika Mehndiratta at No. 5. Freshman Jessica Gomez finished things off by defeating Kristen MacWilliam, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.

The Cougars return to action Friday, February, 29 at 1:30 p.m., as they host Oregon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
