PULLMAN, Wash. -Washington State posted good numbers at opening day of the Cougar Classic. The Cougars will be sending five singles players and 3 doubles teams to the third round of the tournament.
"I was very pleased with how we competed," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We have some things to work on, but it's good to see that we are being represented by five singles players and three doubles teams in the semis."
Senior Ekaterina Burduli (Tel Aviv, Israel), ranked 113th preseason in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, started strong in the first round with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Montana's Martyna Nowak. In the second round she defeated Portland's Megan Sprondli 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.
Freshman Ekaterina Kamendova advanced to the No. 1 singles semifinals with wins over Montana's Liz Walker and Gonzaga's Emily Anderson.
In No. 2 singles Bianca Selaru posted one win while teammate Aleksandra Stefanova reached the semifinals with two victories.
The No. 1 doubles team of Aleksandra Cekic and Jessic Gomez won their first round match over Gonzaga's Carrie Schofield and Kristen MacWilliams, 8-4 to advance to the second round.
