MOSCOW, Idaho -- Washington State University's Phil MacArthur and McKenzie Garberg were the top collegian hammer throwers at the Vandal Jamboree Track & Field Meet Friday afternoon amid cool and windy conditions at Dan O'Brien Track Complex in Moscow.

MacArthur, a sophomore from Selkirk, Wash., threw the hammer a lifetime-best and improved NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 187-feet, 2 inches (57.05m) for second place overall. Matt Wauters, throwing unattached after exhausting his eligibility at Idaho, had the top throw of the day at 211-11 (64.60m). WSU's Chase Mancuso finished sixth with a throw of 168-1 (51.24m).

Garberg, the Pac-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week last week, won the women's hammer with an NCAA RQ mark of 180-6 (55.02m), although she has thrown the hammer 194-9 earlier this season.

"Phil really uncorked one today and we have been waiting to see this all season," Cougar Associate Coach Debra Farwell said. "This is a sign of good things to come in the next weeks of competition."

A limited number of Cougars will compete in the rest of the events at the Vandal Jamboree Saturday, while the WSU heptathletes and decathletes will compete in the first day of the Pac-10 Combined Events Championships Saturday at Stanford.
