Final Stats

PULLMAN, Wash. - Gabe Cohen's RBI double in the eighth sparked a four-run inning as UCLA rallied for a 7-5 victory over Washington State in their Pacific-10 Conference series Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The loss completes the Cougars conference schedule as they finish 10-14, matching last year's record. WSU began Pac-10 play 1-9 only to finish the season winning nine of their last 14.

The Cougars (27-24, 10-14) held a 4-2 lead entering the eighth when UCLA (29-24, 13-8) strung together five hits off three Cougar relievers. Alden Carrithers started things with a single to right, one of his four hits on the afternoon. Cody Decker, Casey Haerther and Cohen each collected RBIs in the frame as the Bruins took a 6-4 lead.

The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the eighth when Jim Murphy scored on Scott Suttmeier's RBI groundout to short. The Bruins added an insurance run in the ninth for the final margin of victory.

Nick Ison started for WSU and produced one of his better starts this season. Ison allowed single runs in the first and third, but kept the UCLA bats silent for much of the afternoon. Decker drove home Carrithers in the first with the first of two RBIs on the day.

The Cougars took advantage of a pair of Bruins errors in the second to take a two-run lead. Murphy led off by getting hit then came around when Mike Gilbert reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jermaine Curtis. Curtis' throw went into foul territory down the first base line, allowing Gilbert to race to third. When the throw to third got away, Gilbert raced home.

The Cougars took their final lead in the sixth as Jeff Miller and Murphy led off with back-to-back singles. Gilbert then drove home Miller with an infield out then Zach Borba's sacrifice fly plated Murphy for the 4-2 lead.

Ison left the game after seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Ross Humes, the fourth pitcher of the afternoon, was saddled with the loss. Offensively Travis Coulter and Cody Bartlett each had two hits for the Cougars.

UCLA starter Gavin Brooks worked into the eighth to pick up his fourth win of the season. Brooks allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts in his 7 2/3 innings of work. Garett Claypool went the rest of the way to pick up his fourth save on the season.

At the plate the Bruins collected 13 hits, four by Carrithers and three each by Decker and Cohen.

The Cougars will begin their final series of the season Friday when they face UC Davis in Davis, Calif. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
