LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Five Washington State University track and field competitors reached NCAA Regional Qualifying marks at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite at UCLA and the Mt. SAC Invite at Mt. San Antonio College.
A pair of Cougars reached NCAA RQ marks at Drake Stadium on the UCLA campus. Jon Jeffreys (junior, Spokane Valley, Wash.) won the men's invitational javelin event with a season-best and improved NCAA RQ mark of 216-feet, 6 inches (66.00m). Robert Williams (sophomore, Riverside, Calif.)had the top time in the preliminary heats of the men's 400m intermediate hurdles, a PR of 51.87 seconds.
At the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer-Lodge Stadium, Chris Concha (junior, Reno, Nev.) took third place in the men's Olympic Development University/Open 3000m steeplechase, with a PR and NCAA RQ time of 9-minutes, 6.99 seconds. Teammate Alex Grant (junior, Bellingham, Wash.) finished 10th in the same race with a time of 9:19.77.
In the women's Invitational University/Open 3000m steeplechase, Meghan Leonard (junior, Newberg, Ore.) ran a PR and improved NCAA RQ time of 10:36.22 which was 12th place, but the third-best time in WSU women's history.
In Thursday action at UCLA, McKenzie Garberg (junior, Benton City, Wash.) threw the hammer an improved NCAA RQ mark of 187-2 (57.04m) for fifth place in the women's competition and Phil MacArthur (sophomore, Selkirk, Wash.) finished sixth in the men's hammer with a toss of 178-8 (54.47m).
Complete results from UCLA will not be available until after 10:30 p.m. Friday. Both meets continue Saturday, with Cougars competing at the Mt. SAC Relays Sunday.
