March 31, 2007

Final Stats

BERKELEY, Calif. - California scored three runs in the eighth inning to break open a close game en route to a 6-2 win over Washington State in a Pacific-10 Conference game Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond.

With the loss the Cougars fall to 15-12 overall, 0-5 in conference play while the Bears take the first two games of the series and improve to 17-13, 2-0 in Pac-10 action.

Holding one to a 3-2 lead in the eighth, the Golden Bears loaded the bases before Michael Brady squeezed home Brett Munster for the first run of the inning. Charlie Cutler followed with a two-run single, adding two insurance runs for the 6-2 lead. In the ninth reliever Matt Gorgen, the fourth Cal pitcher on the day, retired the Cougars in order to preserve the win.

The teams traded runs in the second as for the second straight day the Cougars opened the scoring. With two outs three straight singles off the bats of Cody Bartlett, Josh Ashenbrenner and Ryan Krauser produced the first run, with Krauser's first hit of the day driving home Bartlett from second. In the bottom of the inning Josh Satin led off with a single then scored on Smith's RBI single to left.

Cougar catcher Greg Lagreid put WSU back on top in the sixth as he connected for his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center. It marked the second consecutive game Lagreid has homered as he is now tied with Jeff Miller for the team lead. The one-run advantage was short-lived as Ryan Hanlon's RBI single in the bottom of the inning brought home David Cooper to tie the game at 2-2.

The Bears took their first lead of the game in the seventh when Michael Brady led off with an infield single. One out later and after Ross Humes relieved starter Nick Ison, pinch-hitter Taylor Grigsby singled up the middle, scoring Brady from second.

The Cougars collected 11 hits on the afternoon, two each by Krauser, Travis Coulter and Josh Ashenbrenner. Ison started and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits as his record falls to 3-4. Humes and Nick Cebula combined for the final 1 2/3 innings.

Cal starter Alex Rollin improved to 7-1 this season as he allowed two runs while scattering 10 hits. At the plate Cal had 14 hits, three each by Satin and Hanlon.

These teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
