WALNUT, Calif. -- Temperatures in the upper 80s left some of the Washington State track and field competitors in the dust Thursday during the distance races at the 48th Mt. San Antonio College Relays contested at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Meghan Leonard (sophomore, Newberg, Ore.) finished fifth in the women's University/Invitational 3000m steeplechase elite race with a time of 10:41.74, an NCAA Regional Qualifier but just slightly slower than her previous time of 10:41.04.
"Meghan raced well considering this heat," Cougar Assistant Coach Jason Drake said. "I'm really proud of the way she performed, and all the distance kids today, because the heat eventually gets them."
In women's University/Open races, Brandi Probasco-Canda (sophomore, Portland, Ore.) ran a season-best 400m dash time of 55.60 seconds for first place. Also running season-best times were Sara Trané (freshman, Sweden) with a time of 2:11.54 for seventh-place in the 800m, Collier Lawrence (sophomore, Reno, Nev.) with a time of 11:07.07 in the 3000m steeplechase (13th), and Kelly Ramirez (sophomore, Duvall, Wash.) ran a 10,000m personal-best time of 36:51.53 for 11th.
In the men's University/Open 10,000m race, Andrew Jones ran a PR time of 30:56.75 for 15th place.
The afternoon heat took a toll on Cougar steeplechaser Phil Hinrichs and 1500m runner Justin Ireland as both dropped out of their races prior to finishing.
The Mt. San Antonio College Relays continue through Saturday at Walnut, Calif.
