Broncheau, Wauters Win WSU Indoor Open Weight Throws

PULLMAN, Wash. -- A pair of Idaho throwers successfully defended their WSU Open titles Friday night at the WSU Open Indoor Track & Field Meet. Jen Broncheau won the women's 20-pound weight throw and Matthew Wauters won the men's 35-pound weight throw in the opening events of the two-day meet.

Broncheau's best throw was 54-feet, 11 1/2 inches (16.75m) with Vandal teammate Shanna Lytle second with a toss of 47-3 1/2 (14.41m). Central Washington's Krissy Tandle took third place with a toss of 46-11 1/2 (14.31m) while WSU sophomore Jessica Zita, competing unattached, took fourth place with a best throw of 46-6 (14.17m).

In the men's weight throw, Wauters had an NCAA Provisional Qualifying throw of 63-4 (19.30m) for first place. Idaho's Russ Winger had the second-best collegiate throw at 59-5 1/2 (18.12m). George Mathews, a masters division thrower from the Iron Wood Throwers Club threw the 20# weight 63-3 1/2 (19.29m). WSU redshirt freshman Phil MacArthur finished ninth with a best toss of 49-11 1/4 (15.22m), and Cougar freshman Chase Mancuso threw 46-2 1/2 (14.08m) for 15th.

The WSU Open continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the remaining field and all the running events. Spectator admission is free of charge.
