BOULDER, Colo. - Despite capturing three singles victories the No. 68 Washington State women's tennis team fell to the No. 73 Colorado Buffaloes, 4-3, at the University of Colorado Tennis Complex Thursday. With the loss the Cougars move their overall record to 2-2.
At No. 1 doubles freshman Ekaterina Burduli and vetran Nora Gaal fell to Martina Sedivec/Kendra Strandemo, 8-2. Enjoying the only doubles victory for Washington State was senior Chris Martinez and sophomore Amy Toth who combined to put down Jessica Vanderdys/Veera Nurmi, 8-4. Rounding out doubles play was senior Orsolya Sallai and freshman Aleksandra Stefanova who came up short against Lynzee Kever/Jenny Hanson, 8-3.
In singles play, Burduli captured her fourth straight singles victory and third in the No. 1 position by knocking off Strandemo, 6-2, 7-6(4). In the No. 2 position, Sallai took her opponent, Kever, into three sets but fell, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Martinez, playing in the No. 3 slot, posted her tenth win on the season and third in a row by handing Vanderdys a loss, 6-3, 6-1. With the triumph, Martinez put herself into a three-way tie for eighth place on the all-time career singles victory list. Fellow teammate Gaal and Tunde Nagy, who played for the Cougars in 1995-98 also share the No. 8 notch.
Rounding out the victories for the Cougars was Toth who beat Sedivec, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 5 position.
The Cougars will look to rebound this Saturday and Sunday. Washington State will clash with Iowa, Saturday, Feb. 5 and then go on to face Nebraska, Sunday, Feb. 6. Both matches will begin at 8 a.m. CST/6 a.m. PST and they will both be played in Lincoln, Neb.
