Final Stats
Zach McAngus went 5-for-5 with two doubles, scoring two runs and driving home one run Washington State Saturday, as WSU beat No. 29 Birmingham-Southern 12-8 in a non-conference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Bryce Chamberlin (6-0) was the winning pitcher for the Cougars (18-8), going six innings while allowing two runs, all earned, and striking out six. WSU is 8-0 when Chamberlin gets the starting nod.
"I am extremely pleased with Chamberlin's performance today," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "I was also very happy with our offense. When they started to come back late in the game we responded and created opportunities to score."
Starter Josh Britnell (2-3) took the loss for the Panthers (19-8), throwing 4.1 innings, while allowing six runs, five earned, and nine hits.
The Cougars started off with a 1-0 lead after the first and never trailed. Kaeo Rubin extended his hitting streak to 10 games when he led off the first with a single to left field. Grant Richardson hit a single to center field two batters later to drive home Rubin.
McAngus hit his first double in the fourth inning to advance Jeremy Farrar, who led off the inning with a single, to third. Justin Hart then singled to score Farrar. Brandon Reddinger followed with a sacrifice bunt to score McAngus and Rubin singled through the right side, to score Hart.
The Cougars scored three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead. The first run came when Farrar singled to center to score Jay Miller, who reached on an error. McAngus then singled to bring Farrar home. Justin Hart followed with a double down the left-field line to score McAngus.
Richardson hit his sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning to score Jason Freeman and cushion the Cougars lead, 9-2.
WSU posted three more runs in the seventh to cap the Cougars' scoring, pushing WSU over BSC 12-4. With two outs, Freeman and Rubin scored on a single down the left field line by Miller who then scored on a single by Richardson.
The Panthers were held scoreless until the sixth when Conner Robertson scored the first run of the game for BSC following a double by Jared Walker. Two batters later, Walker scored when Ryan Griffith grounded out. BSC added another pair of runs in the seventh when Michael Wydner and Matt Bogue both singled to put runners on base. Wydner then scored on a balk and Bogue scored on a ground out by Michael Cline.
Griffith scored the first of two runs for the Panthers in the eighth off of a ground out by Pat Mizerany, who also drove home Griffith for the final BSC run in the ninth. The second run in the eighth, came when Jonathan Sanford, who had reached base on a single, scored on a balk. In the ninth, Sanford singled up the middle to score Tucker, who had pinch hit two batters earlier.
The Cougars will look to complete a sweep of the Panthers Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field. Game time is set for noon.
