Cougars Fall One Run Short In First Pac-10 Game

Washington State's Jason Freeman, who had three RBI in WSU's 8-7 loss to Arizona, was left stranded on third in the ninth inning, putting the Cougar baseball team 0-1 in Pacific-10 play, Friday at Kindall Field.

Aaron MacKenzie (3-2) took the loss for the Cougs (14-7), pitching five innings, striking out seven while allowing 11 hits and six runs, five of which were earned. Dane Renkert and Brett Beetham also saw mound time for the Cougars.

Koley Koberly (3-2) earned the Wildcat (12-10-1) win by pitching six innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out nine. Derek Rodriguez collected his fourth save of the season by holding WSU to no hits and no runs in 1.1 innings.

WSU took a two run lead in the top of the second after Brandon Reddinger singled to right field, to bring home Jeremy Farrar, who reached on a walk, for the first run of the game. Reddinger scored the second run of the game following a single to center field by Justin McClure.

The Cougs did not score again until the sixth inning when Farrar tripled to bring in Zach McAngus who was walked to lead off the inning. Freeman singled up the middle to score Farrar, to bring WSU within two runs.

WSU added its final three runs in the seventh after Jay Miller, Grant Richardson and Zach Kosturos all singled to load the bases to start off the inning. The first run resulted from Farrar being hit by a pitch to score Miller. Freeman then hit a single to center to score Richardson and Kosturos.

Bill Rhinehart led the Wildcats with three hits and drove home two runs with a two-run homerun in the sixth inning for the win.

Arizona scored its first run in the second with triples by Jordan Brown and Pat Reilly and added another run in the fourth following a triple by Trevor Crowe and a double by Derek Decater.

In the fifth inning the Wildcats added four more runs, to bring the score to 6-2. The first two runs came on a two-run double by Brown. Brown then scored the third run following a single by Crowe. Crowe was thrown out at home following a single by Reilly, who scored on a throwing error.

The Cougars will face Arizona Saturday, March 27 for the second game of the three game series at Kindall Field. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at noon.
