SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - T.J. Cummings scored 12 points as UCLA got past a
determined Washington State 48-45 to go undefeated in Pacific-10 Conference
play Thursday in the Spokane Arena.
Dijon Thompson, who scored 11 points, sank a pair of free throws in the
final seconds to ice the win.
The Bruins (7-3, 3-0 Pac-10) were unable to shake the Cougars, who trailed
by a point at the half and hung with UCLA the rest of the way. WSU (7-6, 1-2)
was trying for its first victory over the Bruins since a 67-56 win on Feb. 6,
1993, in Pullman.
Cummings also led Bruins rebounders with 8.
Washington State took the lead, 42-40, on a 3-pointer by Shami Gill with
5:10 remaining and the teams traded baskets the rest of the way. A layup by
Cedric Bozeman with 1:05 remaining put the Bruins up to stay 46-45.
UCLA jumped out to a 7-2 lead in a low-scoring first period, then held on
for a 20-19 halftime lead. The Bruins, which shot about 43 percent from the
floor, got 12 points off turnovers and 15 second chance points to WSU's 2.
Marcus Moore led WSU scoring with 13 points. Chris Schlatter added 11
points.
The Cougars shot 37.5 percent from the floor, missing 13 of 17 3-point
attempts.
The Bruins outrebounded WSU 33-30.
The game was played in the Spokane Arena, about 75 miles north of the WSU
campus.
