ANNAPOLIS, Md. - WSU (2-1-0) picked up its second win Friday over East Carolina (1-2-0) at the U.S. Naval Academy Tournament.
The Cougs controlled the game over the Pirates, outshooting them 27-6. East Carolina took the initial lead 25 minutes into the first half off a free kick.
The Cougars leading scorer Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) came up with her second goal of the season off a free kick three minutes later, hitting the right corner of the net just out of the keepers reach. DeWitt now has 30 career goals, second all-time at WSU.
Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) came up with the early assist as well as the game-winner with nine minutes remaining in play, a far post shot in the upper corner. Junior Liz Duncan (Richland, Wash.) made the assist, her second of the season.
"We had a ton of chances. Their goalie made a few good saves, but we had trouble finishing today," head coach Dan Tobias said. "So we're happy with the results, but not particularly pleased with our performance."
The Cougs finish their East Coast trip Sunday at noon PST when they take on Navy in Annapolis.
