PULLMAN, Wash. - The Cougar soccer team defeated Portland State 9-0 on its home turf Sunday, remaining undefeated in Pullman and bringing their overall record to 6-2-0. Washington State soccer is off to its best start in the program's history, never having won more than five games at this point in the season.
The game-winner came in the 20th minute by junior Natalie Kehl (Spokane, Wash.), who came back with another goal two minutes later. The goals were her third and fourth of the season.
"The game went really well," Kehl said. "We played as a team and we played the full 90 minutes. For my goals I was in the right place at the right time."
Next on the board was junior co-captain Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) who also had the assist on the first goal. Childs now leads the team in assists with four.
Freshman midfielder Rachel Rodrick (University Place, Wash.) scored her first career points with a goal in the 48th minute and then another in the 78th. Rodrick has started every game for the Cougs this season.
Following Rodrick's act, freshman Mariette Boyce (West Linn, Ore.), picked up her third career goal when she finished a cross from Katrina Stroh (Federal Way, Wash.). Stroh's assist keeps her as the top point holder for the Cougs with 11 (four goals, three assists.)
Senior co-captain Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.) picked up her fourth goal of the season, with a header off a cross from Liz Duncan (Richland, Wash.). DeWitt's 32 career goals are second in Cougar history.
Freshman Kim Morgan (Seattle, Wash.), who has been a regular starter for the Cougars, scored her first career goal off a cross from Danielle Sass (Vancouver, Wash.). Sass picked up her first career points with two assists against the Vikings.
Sophomore Erin Cook (Portland, Ore.) scored her first career goal with a finish in the 81st minute of play.
Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) and Sarah Leibowitz (Simi Valley, Calif.) split the shutout as the Cougars outshot the Vikings 53 to one.
"When you're facing an opponent that's struggling, it can be a dangerous situation, but I thought we did a good job of establishing the tempo and finishing our chances," head coach Dan Tobias said about today's game with the now 0-10 Vikings.
