TEMPLE, Ariz. - Sixth-ranked Arizona State defeated the WSU women's tennis team 7-2 in a Pac-10 dual hosted by the Sun Devils Saturday in the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Cougars two wins were a result of recent injuries to the ASU line-up. With injuries to #12 nationally -ranked Allison Bradshaw and senior Karry Giaedino the Sun Devils were unable to field six players for Saturday's match. The deficiency automatically defaulted wins to WSU freshman Kathleen Pienaar (Belville, South Africa) at the No. 6 singles position, and the WSU duo of Pienaar and junior Moniek van de Ven (Stellenbosch, South Africa) at the No. 3 doubles position.
After defeating UA's #86 nationally-ranked Uzma Khan (6-3,6-4) Friday, WSU junior transfer Ana Maria Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) fell to ASU's #61 Megan Years (6-3,6-1) at the No. 3 position. ASU's Mhairi Brown earned her 20th consecutive win by defeating WSU junior Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) in a close match at the No. 4 position (7-5,6-4). WSU's van de Ven lost a three-set match to ASU's Celena McCoury 6-7(5),6-1,6-1 at the No.5 position.
The Cougars are now 10-9 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-10.
WSU travels to Los Angeles, Calif. Friday April 14 to take on No. 10 USC at 1:30 p.m., and No. 5 UCLA Saturday at noon.
