Women's Tennis Falls To UCLA, 7-2

LOS ANGELES - The 8th-ranked Bruins defeated the Cougars 7-2 in a Pac-10 dual hosted by the Bruins at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Saturday.

WSU junior Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) earned the first win for the Cougars by defeating UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles position.

The second win for the Cougars was posted by WSU freshman Kathleen Pienaar (Bellville, South Africa). Pienaar picked up her second win of the weekend by defeating UCLA's Petya Marinova in a three-set match 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 6 position.

After defeating USC's # 56 nationally ranked Kara Warkentin Friday, senior Patrycja Gajdzik (Szczecin, Poland) suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the no. 1 position to UCLA's Sara Walker, who is currently ranked seventh nationally. Friday, Walker defeated Washington 's Kristina Kraszewski, who is currently ranked first nationally.

The Cougars are now 10-11 overall and 1-7 in Pac-10 competition.

WSU will return to action Thursday as it takes on the University of Idaho Vandals in Moscow, Idaho at 2 p.m. The Cougars will wrap up their 2000 regular season action Saturday as they host the No. 22 Washington Huskies Saturday at the Stadium Way Tennis Center at noon.
